Samoun is a 62-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. She has four sons, two daughters, and thirteen grandchildren. She has stopped working due to her condition. She enjoys watching the news on TV and listening to monks pray on the radio.
One year ago, Samoun developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her vision loss. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside.
When Samoun learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On May 5th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
“After my surgery I want to help my children by taking care of my grandchildren. I want to ride a bicycle outside, especially to the rice field,” Samoun said.

Samoun underwent sight-restoring cataract surgery.
Samoun’s surgery was successful! Her doctors removed the cataract in her right eye that was causing her blurry vision and making it difficult for her to walk. She can now see clearly and go anywhere outside. She will also be able to see her four sons, two daughters, and thirteen grandchildren. Her quality of life has improved significantly and she can now continue watching her favorite TV shows. She was discharged from our medical partner’s care facility with eye drops and has been scheduled for a followup appointment at their clinic.
“I was afraid that my vision would be bad forever, and that my eye could be blind. After my surgery, I am so happy that I can see everything clearly again,” Samoun shared.
Her niece also told Watsi, “I feel happy that my aunt can see clearly and she can recognize me. I can’t wait to see her riding her bicycle to the rice fields by herself.”
