Sokhorn is a 45-year-old rice farmer who is married with one son and three daughters. She likes to watch the news and Khmer dramas on TV.
About two years ago, Sokhorn developed a pterygium in each eye, causing her blurred vision, irritation, tearing, and cloudy lenses. A pterygium is an eye growth often caused by prolonged exposure to the sun. Sokhorn has difficulty seeing things clearly, doing any work, and going anywhere outside.
Fortunately, a simple $148 eye surgery can remove the growth, restoring her vision and easing her pain and irritation. On October 21, Sokhorn underwent surgery with our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre.
Sokhorn says, “I hope to look better and feel more comfortable so that I can do any work easily and I can go anywhere outside.”

Sokhorn successfully received vision-restoring cataract surgery.
Sokhorn eye pterygium was successfully removed from her left eye and clear vision has been restored. Following the operation, she was given eye drops to reduce inflammation and fight infection. Sokhorn went home after the first surgery and has yet to return to have the same operation completed in the other eye. Because returning to the clinic requires taking a day off from work and usually a family escort, she may have had trouble finding a day to come back. Also, because she left with clear vision in one eye, her problems with blurred vision are less of a burden making the second surgery a less immediate priority than the first. The second surgery will be free whenever Sokhorn returns.
“I look better and feel more comfortable,” shares Sokhorn. “I can do anything easily now.”
