Sokunthy is a 57-year-old widow from Cambodia. She lives in Phnom Penh province and has four children, two of whom still live at home. Her 15-year-old son is in ninth grade at the local school, and her 13-year-old son is currently not in school, as he is helping an ill grandparent.
In August 2023, as Sokunthy was opening her grocery shop in front of her home, her foot got caught on a rope, and she fell to the ground. She tried to break her fall with her hand and fractured her radius and ulna. She consulted with a local doctor, but unfortunately realized she could not afford his care, and visited a Khmer traditional healer instead. After experiencing pain for four months, she took a friend’s advice and visited our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC).
Fortunately, surgeons at CSC can help Sokunthy. On December 8th, she will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will allow her to use her hand again. Now, she needs help raising $483 to fund her surgery and care.
Sokunthy shared, “I hope the doctors can fix my arm so I can sell groceries again and make sure my children go to school.”
