Chiva is a 23-year-old server at a karaoke restaurant. He lives with his parents and younger sister in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. His parents work long days, six days per week in construction, and his sister is still in high school. Chiva helps support his family by working in a nearby karaoke restaurant. In his free time, he enjoys playing soccer and volleyball.
In September 2022, Chiva was in a motorbike accident that caused a fracture in his right leg. It is difficult for him to walk, and he has a chronic infection in his wound. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), can help. On July 26th, Chiva will undergo a fracture repair procedure to help him walk easily again. CSC is requesting $483 to fund this surgery.
Chiva said, “I hope I can walk like before the accident and go back to work full-time.”

Chiva underwent fracture repair surgery.
Chiva took the advice of a provincial hospital and traveled five hours with his family to have his femur repaired at Children’s Surgical Centre. This was important for his long-term health as his symptoms could have become more serious without corrective surgery. After a short stay in the hospital, he will return to his province to recover. The physical therapy team has given him exercises to improve his gait and gain strength in his leg. He expressed great satisfaction with the results of his surgery as he heals. After recovery, he hopes to return to Phnom Penh to work again so he can supplement the family income. This is important for his self-esteem and his future ability to support himself.
Chiva said: “I am glad I no longer have pain in my right leg and the infection will heal soon. I want to play volleyball with my friends again and be healthy.”
