Meet Rom, a 34-year-old mother of two boys living in Cambodia.
“Four years ago, Rom was in a motor bike accident that resulted in her having an open fracture of her right tibia,” staff at our medical partner Children’s Surgical Centre tell us. “It has been so long since she’s been able to support herself that she no longer holds a job and is dependent on her husband for financial support. She is constantly in pain and struggles to raise her two children when her husband is working. She is very sad because she can’t walk and sitting down doesn’t provide much reprieve.”
Rom will need an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery to repair her broken leg. This procedure, used to repair fractures that did not heal correctly, is a two part surgery. First the bone will be put back into place, and then an internal device will hold that bone in place.
It will cost $405 to fund the surgery for Rom’s leg. The doctors expect that with this surgery, Rom’s “tibia will finally heal and she will be able to walk without support.” Rom hopes that this procedure will help her be able to do more with her sons and be more involved in their lives – lets help make that happen!
