Sameav is an 81-year-old woman from Cambodia who has three sons, one daughter, and 12 grandchildren. “She enjoys talking with her neighbors, taking care of and playing with her grandchildren, and visiting the pagoda to listen to the monks pray,” says our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC).
“Sameav developed a cataract in each eye three years ago,” CSC explains. “This causes her blurred vision, tearing, and irritation. She can’t see things clearly, do work well, or go anywhere outside on her own.” As a result, Sameav traveled six hours with her son to seek treatment at CSC.
In order to restore her vision, Sameav requires extracapsular cataract extraction—a surgical procedure that will remove the cloudy lenses and replace them with implant lenses. Sameav needs assistance from the Watsi community to cover the $225 cost of her surgery, after which she should be able to see clearly again.
