61-year-old Seang Hy is a grandmother of two from Cambodia. For three years now, she has experienced blurred vision and tearing in both of her eyes. Not being able to see clearly makes it difficult for Seang Hy to complete even basic household work. She is also anxious that her vision will continue to deteriorate.
Seang Hy isn’t wrong to be worried that her eyesight could get worse. Both of her eyes have cataracts, or cloudy lenses, which are the world’s leading cause of blindness. After traveling five hours to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, Seang Hy was given hope. Doctors there told her that a two-step procedure can restore her vision. In the first stage, known as phacoemulsification, surgeons will remove each of her clouded lenses. Then, they will insert fully-functioning artificial lenses into her eyes.
Seang Hy’s operation will take place on February 21, but she cannot afford to pay for it on her own. For $292, we can cover the costs of Seang Hy’s operation, as well as the medications and four-day hospital stay that she will need to recover fully.
