Sopheap is a 20-year-old construction worker from Cambodia who has two brothers and three sisters. In his free time, he likes to listen to music on the radio and watch TV.
In 2014, Sopheap was in a motorbike accident, which caused head trauma and a fracture in his right femur. He went to a hospital, where surgeons performed an external fixation to heal the fracture. One month later, he went to a Khmer traditional healer to remove the external fixation. However, the removal caused a knee contracture, which made it difficult for him to bend his leg. He then had to use crutches to get around.
In 2015, he traveled four hours with his mother to reach our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), where surgeons performed an open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) procedure and a bone graft to heal his fracture.
He later experienced mild pain when he walked and thus returned to CSC. On January 11, surgeons will remove the hardware from his previous ORIF procedure to allow him to walk comfortably again. CSC has requested $411 to fund the surgery.
