Bokosi is a 43-year-old father from Chimaliza Village, Lilongwe District, Malawi. He is the last born in a family of 14 children and has four children in primary school. Bokosi depends on growing maize and groundnuts, as well as selling charcoal, to support his family. For four years, Bokosi has been experiencing swelling on the right side of his scrotum. He never thought of seeking medical help until the swelling became painful; he decided to seek help at a nearby health center in his area, where he was prescribed drugs, but to no avail. Bokosi then decided to visit Nkhoma Hospital, where he was diagnosed with a right inguinal hernia and was scheduled to undergo hernia repair surgery. Due to a lack of funds, Bokosi was referred to the SAFE program with a pledge to pay what he could afford. On May 9th, Bokosi is scheduled for hernia repair surgery with the help of our medical partner African Mission Healthcare. This condition has had a negative impact on Bokosi’s life as he is unable to work on his farm and business due to the pain brought on by the condition. Treatment will free Bokosi of the pain and prevent complications that can arise if the condition is left untreated, such as strangulation, which can be life-threatening. Jackline is a 17-year-old student from Machakos County in Kenya. She is in form three at AIC Kunikela High School and aspires to become a doctor in the future. Both of her parents are farmers. When she was one year old, Jackline was burned on her left elbow by hot water. After the burn healed, she developed a contracture of her elbow, preventing her from using her arm to help her mother around the house or play volleyball, her favorite sport. While she has been to different hospitals, the contracture remains, negatively impacting her self-esteem. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is here to help. On May 8th, surgeons at AIC Cure International Hospital will perform burn contracture release surgery, enabling Jackline to use her arm and hand more easily. Jackline and her family need your help to fund this $840 procedure. “My joy would be to use my hand like other people, and any help to correct this will be highly appreciated,” Jackline told us.

Meet Juliet, a small-scale farmer and mother of five. Her dream was to become a banker, but her father passed away when she was in primary school, and her family was unable to continue to pay her school fees. Juliet is married and earns a living through farming, while her husband works as a builder. They live in a two-roomed home in southwestern Uganda. Three of their children are in school, and the other two children are married or working. For five years now, Juliet has had an inguinal hernia. This condition causes her pain and discomfort, especially when she lifts things, coughs, or does strenuous work like cultivating the farm. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), is helping her receive treatment. On March 21st, Juliet will undergo hernia repair surgery at AMH’s care center. Once completed, this procedure will allow her to live more comfortably and confidently. AMH is requesting $230 to fund Juliet's surgery. Juliet said: “I hope to get healed when I am operated on and continue with my activities in good health.”
