Meet Sopheap, a 61-year-old woman who lives with her husband, daughter, and son-in-law. Her daughter and son-in-law work in local retail shops to support the family, while her husband stays at home to take care of her. Before the accident, Sopheap enjoyed cleaning the house and cooking for her family. On August 23rd, Sopheap sustained two small lacerations on the palmar side of her right hand after falling on the floor. She visited a hospital, where the doctor sutured the lacerations but did not address the tendon damage. She is unable to flex the middle joint of her finger, which affects her ability to do her daily activities. Sopheap and her children were referred by a public hospital and traveled to our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), seeking treatment. On August 28th, Sopheap will undergo a flexor tendon exploration and repair surgery, where the surgeons will examine and repair the damaged tendons in her right middle finger. The procedure aims to restore the function of the tendons, which will help improve her ability to bend and straighten her finger effectively. Sopheap and her family are able to contribute $100 but need help to raise $472 more to fund the surgery and post-operative care that Sopheap requires. Sopheap says, "After the surgery, I hope I will be able to help take care of myself and my family again."

Hong is a 61-year-old grocery seller from Cambodia. He is married with two daughters, two sons, and six grandchildren. His wife stays home to manage the household and care for one of his sons who has a mental health condition. In his free time, he enjoys listening to music and news on his small portable radio. About a year ago, Hong developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him sensitivity to light and blurred vision. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so is not able to go places on his own. He is unable to help around the house and feels bad because he considers it part of his responsibility to his family. When Hong learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for six hours seeking treatment. On October 8th, doctors are scheduled to perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. Hong's family can contribute $25 but needs help to raise $228 more to fund this procedure. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Hong added "I hope that after my operation, my eyesight will improve. I want to recognize my family's faces and continue to work."

Boika is a toddler from Haiti. He lives with his parents and four siblings in a small rural village where his parents are both farmers. Boika has a cardiac condition called ventricular septal defect. A hole exists between the two lower chambers of his heart; blood leaks through this hole without passing through the lungs to obtain oxygen, leaving him weak and short of breath. Boika also has Down syndrome. Boika will fly to the Dominican Republic to receive treatment. On July 15, he will undergo cardiac surgery, during which Surgeons will sew the hole closed so that blood can no longer leak through it. Another organization is contributing funds to help pay for surgery, but Boika's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep and transportation. These funds will covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment as well as the social workers from our medical partner, International Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Boika's family overseas. Boika's mom said, "I hope that after this surgery, my son will get the strength to start walking and playing on his own."
