Phy is a 63-year-old Cambodian woman with a big family: two sons, five daughters, and one grandchild. Phy enjoys visiting her local pagoda to worship with the monks there.
Lately, though, it’s been hard for Phy to make those trips to the pagoda by herself. She developed a cataract in each eye two years ago. These clouded lenses in her eyes cause her blurred vision and tearing. She can’t see clearly, do work well, or go outside on her own. She must depend on others to guide her through the world.
Phy usually earns money for her family by farming rice. However, this income source has been compromised lately because of her cataracts. Unfortunately, this means she cannot afford the surgery that would fix her cataracts; but without this surgery, she cannot return to work.
But there is hope for Phy. For $225, we can sponsor the operation she needs. In a two-part procedure, doctors will remove both of Phy’s clouded lenses, then replace each with an artificial lens. After this surgery, Phy will be able to see clearly again.
“I hope my vision will be better after surgery so that I can travel outside alone and can help my family by working again,” Phy adds. “I also look forward to being able to take care of my grandchild again.”
