Meet Thuon, a 60-year-old woman from Cambodia. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), tells us, “Thuon has a husband, five children and ten grandchildren. When she isn’t on the farm, she spends her time doing house work.”
Thuon has been diagnosed with a cataract in her left eye—a condition in which a structure develops over the eye lens, causing blurred vision, which can worsen over time. When they reach maturation, cataracts can lead to swelling and cover the entire lens with an opaque layer. Cataracts are often caused by age.
CSC explains, “Thuon’s cataract is so severe that it partially blinds her and she worries she may go blind. She finds it very hard to do work on her farm and she also has great difficulty going to the pagoda, or anywhere for that matter.”
For $150 Thuon will receive a surgery where the clouded lens of her left eye will be removed and replaced with a clear lens implant. CSC tells us that once Thuon receives this treatment, her vision will be repaired.
CSC shares, “After her surgery, Thuon hopes to return to the farm, go to the pagoda by herself and visit the other provinces in Cambodia she’s never been to.”
