Leakhena is a quiet 14-year-old girl from Cambodia. She and her twin brother live with their 65-year-old grandmother in Kampong Cham province. Her brother is learning to be a monk at a local temple, while Leakhena stays home to help their grandmother. At home, Leakhena likes to watch TV. According to her grandmother, Leakhena has had knee stiffness and difficulty walking since she was a toddler and is unable to fully straighten her right knee. When Leakhena's family learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, they traveled for three and a half hours to seek treatment. On February 15th, surgeons at CSC will perform a quadricepsplasty procedure of her right leg to help her walk better. Leakhena needs our help to fund this $482 procedure. She said: "I hope it will be easy to walk and I will not have any pain."

Kanha is a 23-year-old police officer from Cambodia. She lives with her parents and two siblings in Siem Reap province. Her parents are rice farmers, her oldest sister is also a police officer and her youngest sister is still in high school. In her free time, she helps her parents in the rice fields, goes to cafes with her sisters, and enjoys listening to music. Two months ago, Kanha was in a traffic accident, resulting in trauma to her right leg and a laceration on her right arm. She was rushed to an emergency hospital and treated for a fracture in her right leg. Since the accident, she has experienced limited function in her arm. Her doctors advised her to visit Phnom Penh for treatment. She has been diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury on her right side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this nerve network can result in loss of function and sensation. Now, she cannot move her right arm and is unable to work, or carry out everyday activities like driving her motorbike. Kanha traveled to our medical partner's care center, Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre to receive treatment. On May 30th, she will undergo a brachial plexus repair surgery. After recovery, she will be able to use her arm again. Kanha is able to contribute $100 but needs help in raising $609 more to fund this procedure. Kanha shared, "I hope to lift my arm again and go back to work to help support my family."

Tor lives in Prey Veng province with his wife, one of his daughters and her family, and four grandchildren. They all work in the nearby rice fields. Tor enjoys watching Cambodian boxing and spending time with his family. Tor's right leg was injured by a bomb during the time of the Khmer Rouge and the injury did not heal properly. Tor has since been diagnosed with Majorlin Ulcer, a type of cancer that can grow from burns, poorly healing wounds, or scars. It grows slowly, but over time it can spread to other parts of the body. As a result of the pain and discomfort, Tor is unable to go up and down stairs and needs assistance for everyday activities. Tor was accompanied by his relatives to travel four hours to reach Children's Surgical Centre. On February 21st, Tor will have an above-the-knee amputation at this facility. The amputation will eliminate pain and help prevent the cancer from spreading. The family needs help to fund this procedure and our medical partner is requesting $479 to cover medications, surgical materials, and four nights of hospital stay. His grandson said, "I hope my grandfather can have surgery so he is no longer in pain and can enjoy time with his family."
