Chanla is a 40-year-old who is married and has one son and one daughter, both of whom are students in a public school. He and his wife run a small grocery shop in front of their house, where they sell snacks and drinks. When not managing their store, Chanla likes to listen to the news on the radio.
One year ago, Chanla developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him blurry vision and photophobia. He has difficulty working in his store because he is unable to assist customers due his declining vision.
When Chanla learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On November 1st, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and place an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
Chanla shared, “I hope after surgery I will see well. It is important for me to see well to change money so I can help my wife to sell groceries.”

Chanla underwent cataract surgery to heal his left eye.
Chanla realized that he needed to do something about his failing vision so that he did not become totally dependent on others. He took the advice of his relatives and underwent cataract surgery, which he can already see will change his life for the better. He returned home the following day with rest and eye-care instructions for the following week. As his vision slowly improves, he is amazed at how poor his vision had previously been and is excited that he can see others clearly again, go outside in the bright sun, and be much more active. He looks forward to working with customers who come to his store now!
Chanla’s wife shared: “I am grateful to the staff who have made my husband’s life easier now that he can see better. I want to thank the strangers who support the hospital so that Cambodians like Chanla have the chance to improve their health.”
