“I hope I can see everything clearer than now so I can read any book easily, do any work, and go anywhere outside by myself,” says Phom.
Phom is a 71-year-old man from Cambodia, is married with six sons, one daughter, and 15 grandchildren. “He enjoys visiting the pagoda to join in ceremonies and reading books,” says our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC).
Three years ago, Phom developed a cataract in each eye. “This causes him blurred vision and tearing,” explains CSC. “He can’t see everything clearly, do work well, or go anywhere outside on his own.”
Phom traveled four hours with his wife to reach CSC, where he learned that he could receive phacoemulsification surgery and an implant lens in each eye for $225.
During this procedure, doctors will remove the clouded lenses and replace them with the implants, restoring Phom’s vision to its previous quality and allowing him to return to his normal life.

Phom received vision-restoring cataract surgery.
Phom had one of his cataracts removed in a short surgery, during which his clouded lens was taken out and replaced with a sheer synthetic implant. The procedure went well, and Phom’s vision has already begun to improve and become clearer.
Though he was scheduled to have cataracts removed from both eyes, he has yet to return for the second procedure.
It can often take patients some time to return for follow-up care due to a number of reasons. Patients frequently live far away or have important family matters that keep them from coming back to the clinic. When Phom returns, his second surgery to remove the other cataract will be free.
