Phors is a bright and ambitious 13-year-old student from Cambodia. He is currently in 7th grade, and his favorite subject in school is Khmer literature. He shares that he aspires to be a lawyer when he grows up. He has a younger sister who is in 2nd grade. To support their two children, his mom works in a garment factory and his dad works in construction.
When he was four, Phors was burned on both legs by a low fire. Burn scar contractures eventually developed, tightening the skin around his knees and making it difficult for him to walk.
When Phors and his family learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, they traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On August 9th, surgeons at CSC will perform a burn contracture release surgery so he can walk easily again. Now, his family needs help funding this $495 procedure.
Phors says, “I hope my legs can be healed so I can walk without pain and be comfortable going places.”

Phors underwent burn contracture release surgery.
Surgeons released Phors’s burn contractures and applied skin grafts to cover the back of his knees. He spent several days in the hospital until surgeons were sure the grafts were healing, then he was able to return home.
He and his mother worked with the physiotherapy team to learn how to improve the strength in his legs and walk correctly to avoid further ambulation issues. He will return for a check-up in a month or so. After his leg has healed, he will be able to perform daily activities, like playing with his friends and learning to ride a bike. He is happy he can be like other children and no longer feel ashamed of his legs.
Phors’s mother said: “I was worried my son would never look normal after his burn, but now I have hope he can walk and run like other children. Thank you for helping us to have good health and be strong. We are very grateful.”
