Luis is a 47-year-old Guatemalan who lives with his family in the country’s rural highlands. He and his wife have six children together, four of whom are married and have families, while his youngest two boys still live at home. Due to a work-related injury long ago, Luis has struggled to maintain steady work. His wife prepares and sells food in their local town’s weekly market.
Eight years ago, he began having vision problems, and has suffered from irritation, watery eyes, and itching. Unfortunately he had not been able to afford to visit a doctor to have his eyes checked until about a month ago. Luis was then able to attend a free clinic, where he was diagnosed with myopia, or nearsightedness. In order to fix his blurry vision and inability to see faraway objects, Luis needs glasses fit with prescription lens.
He will visit a care center of our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, to receive his glasses. Our medical partner is seeking $552 to cover Luis’s visit as well as his actual glasses. With Watsi’s support, Luis will be able to live and work more easily, so that he can work to support his family.
Luis says, “I am very grateful to the institution and the donors for helping so many people in need. I will always have you in my prayers, for I am so thankful for the work that you do here in our country of Guatemala.”
