Medla is 17 and pregnant with her first child. She lives with her mother, a farmer, and is still in school. Melda appreciates her education and she hopes to finish primary school in the future. Like any young mother she is nervous. She told a Watsi coordinator at Lwala Community Alliance: “God willing, after a safe delivery I will be able to take care of the child.” She also wants her child to grow-up educated.
Young adolescents are at higher risk of complications during pregnancy but skilled medical care before, during and after childbirth can save the lives of women and newborns. The $215 will provide just that: prenatal care, a hospital delivery and a post-birth checkup on mother and child.
Melda has a lot on her mind and much to do in order to prepare for her first child, but this access to healthcare can help ensure that mom and baby start a healthy life together.
