Tou is a 64-year-old widow with two sons and two daughters; tragically, two of her children passed away during the Khmer Rouge rule and two passed away from measles when they were young. Her husband passed away from hypertension ten years ago, so she has been alone for many years. She lives with her sister and receives some support from her nephews. At home, she helps out around the house. In her free time, she likes to watch Khmer comedies and listen to the monks pray on the radio. One year ago, Tou developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision, sensitivity to light, and tearing. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Tou learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for an hour seeking treatment. On November 10th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure. Tou shared, "I hope after surgery I can see better, and can see my family. I want to do housework, and take care of myself."
