Aisha is a nine-year-old girl from Tanzania. She is in second grade at the local primary school. She is the youngest child in her family, and her parents work as farmers. Aisha was having difficulty breathing while she slept. She also fell ill with several bouts of tonsillitis and throat infection. Her parents sought treatment at many different healthcare facilities without success. Finally, they visited our medical partner's care center, The Plaster House. Aisha was diagnosed with enlarged tonsils. On December 22, she underwent a tonsilectomy to remove her tonsils. This surgery should alleviate her symptoms. Now, her family needs help to pay for this $545 surgery. "I have been everywhere to try to help her, and you are the ones able to do it," says Aisha's mother. "I am very grateful."

Musolo is a 42-year-old husband and father of five girls and two boys who lives with his family in Uganda. He is a business man who deals in fresh food products, and his wife takes care of their home. All of his children attend school, and he pays for their education. In June of 2014, Musolo developed a painful swelling. He went to a hospital in Kampala, where he was diagnosed with a right hydrocele. A hydrocele is a sac of watery fluid that causes swelling in the groin. While hydroceles may occur at any age, the cause of their development is unknown. On December 7, Musolo underwent surgery to treat the hydrocele. During the operation, the surgeon made a small incision to remove the sac of fluid and then used stitches to close the path by which fluid was accumulating. Unfortunately, Musolo cannot afford to pay for the surgery. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $185 to pay for his care. Funding also covers the costs of three days in the hospital, lab tests, and medicine. "I hope to continue my business," shares Musolo.

Benedicto is a nine-month-old boy who was born with a congenital malformation in a sensitive area. He received surgery immediately after birth. Benedicto's family funded this treatment with church donations and loans from friends. On October 9, 2016, Benedicto received two additional surgeries at our medical partner's hospital, Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre. These procedures should relieve him of his uncomfortable symptoms. Now, his family needs help to fund this $975 treatment. "I seek your help in getting treatment for my son because I have no funds," says Benedicto's mother. "I will be very happy and God will bless you."

Mar is a 16-month-old boy from the Philippines. He is a friendly boy who loves playing with his older brothers. He lives in a simple 'sawali' house, made of a plywood-like material. His father is a construction worker, and his mother is a housewife. They only make enough money to cover the basic cost of living. Mar is severely malnourished, which has the potential to cause mental and physical disabilities as he grows. Fortunately, he began $268 malnutrition treatment on October 18, 2016. Through our medical partner, International Care Ministries, Mar will participate in a home-based feeding program. This program will provide him with the nutrients he needs to regain weight and ensure proper mental and physical development. His family will also be educated on proper nutrition, sanitation, and hygiene to promote Mar's healthy development after treatment. "I think having good health is enough for us. That's what I want for my son, Mar," shares his mother.

Hyunnah is a four-year-old girl from the Philippines. She lives with her grandmother and five relatives in a makeshift bamboo house in the mountains. The family relies on her grandmother, Nenita, who works for the local government. Hyannah loves playing and learning how to write. She especially loves writing her own name. Unfortunately, Hyannah has been diagnosed with moderately acute malnutrition. She began $184 malnutrition treatment on October 18, 201b. Hyannah is being treated by International Care Ministries (ICM), a Watsi medical partner. One out of five children under five in ICM communities is either severely or moderately acutely malnourished. Worldwide, poor nutrition is associated with nearly half of all deaths in young children. In remote communities and urban slums of the Philippines, the lack of clean water and unclean environments add risk to potentially fatal childhood diseases. ICM’s Home-Based Feeding program provides nutrient-enriched food packs to ensure malnourished children get additional food to regain normal weight and achieve optimum physical and mental development. After identifying a child as malnourished, staff and community volunteers make weekly visits to monitor this child’s progress. To help sustain the health of the child, ICM's professional staff educate the mother, guardian, or other family members about proper nutrition, sanitation, hygiene, and organic vegetable gardening.
