Busingye is a 46-year-old small scale farmer from Uganda. She has one child who is 10 years old and in primary school, class three. Both she and her husband used to harvest and sell their agricultural produce across the Uganda-Rwanda border, until the border closed and caused their business to close as well. They currently produce crops only for home consumption. For the last 18 years, Busingye has been experiencing severe abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with uterine fibroids when she was 28 years old. After getting married, Busingye gave birth prematurely by emergency C-section, and was advised to seek further care for her fibroids after recovery. Now, as a result of her condition, her stomach bulges out and prevents her from doing work. Busingye experiences dizziness and loss of appetite, and experiences severe abdominal pain. To remedy this, Busingye needs to undergo a hysterectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will remove her uterus. If not treated, she could develop endometrial cancer. Severe pains could worsen, and prevent her from carrying out her usual day to day activities completely. Over the past few years, Busingye has visited many hospitals and spent a lot of money to take care of her child, so she does not have the financial means to fund her surgery. She appeals for financial help. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $228 to fund Busingye's surgery. On December 11th, she will undergo a hysterectomy at our medical partner's care center. Once recovered, Busingye will be able to resume her daily activities free of pain and her quality of life will improve. Busingye shared, “My family cannot currently afford the surgery and ask for your support. I will resume farming as soon as possible once given treatment.”

Muoysean is an 18-year-old food seller from Cambodia. She likes to cook and help around the house in her free time. Since she was three years old, Muoysean had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the ear drum, in her right ear to perforate. For this reason, Muoysean experiences discharge, tinnitus, and hearing loss. She has recurrent infections which cause irritation and poor hearing. Muoysean traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On March 4, she will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in her right ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $423 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. She says, "I hope that after my surgery, my ear will be able to heal and I will regain my hearing."

Meet, Alinafe, a one-year old baby girl living in Malawi. To support the family, “Alinafe’s mother runs a small scale business to earn their living,” shares our medical partner, World Altering Medicine (WAM). At a crucial point in her early childhood development, Alinafe has experienced growth issues as a result of a condition called hydrocephalus. Alinafe was brought to WAM’s clinic when her mother observed a growth on her head. A medical examination confirmed the diagnosis of hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is a rare neurological medical condition caused by a fluid buildup in a localized area of the brain. Without intervention, the pressure and fluid buildup can lead to long term health complications, especially throughout important stages of childhood development. At this point, Alinafe is beginning to have problems with her vision and is experiencing issues with walking. With, $992, Alinafe will undergo surgery to drain the excess fluid from her brain. This procedure will be done by means of an endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV), which will naturally drain out the blocked fluid. In addition to her operation, Alinafe will receive seven days of hospitalized care as well as all of the necessary preoperative and postoperative examinations required for a safe surgery. This procedure is expected to have a great impact on Alinafe’s childhood growth and overall health, allowing her to “regain her sight and start walking again,” comments WAM. “I am hopeful to have the surgery done,” Alinfe’s mother shares.
