Nyunt is a 67-years-old woman from Burma. She lives with her children and used to work as a subsistence farmer. She also raises some chickens and pigs. In her free time, she enjoys going to the temple and listening to the monks’ sermons. Nyunt started to feel unwell in 2015, when she experienced pain in her lower abdomen. She stopped working because of her symptoms. She has been diagnosed with a uterine prolapse. She has been advised to undergo a total abdominal hysterectomy, the surgical removal of her uterus and cervix. If left untreated, Nyunt's symptoms will continue to worsen and put her at risk for further health complications in the future. Fortunately, Nyunt is scheduled to undergo her hysterectomy on December 14. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $1,500 to cover the total cost of her procedure and care. After surgery, Nyunt will no longer experience abdominal pain. She says, "“After I recover, I would like to look after my chickens and pig, and go to the temple to meditate.”

Kyel is a 15-year-old student from Thailand. He lives with his two younger brothers in an orphanage in Mae Sot. Two days ago, Kyel was playing football with some friends. He slid and his friend tripped and landed on top of his arm, fracturing it. Kyel is in a great deal of pain and is unable to sleep at night. He is sad that he won’t be able to play football in the foreseeable future. He also won't be able to do his laundry or garden. With the help of our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, Kyel will undergo surgery to reset his fractured bones and ensure proper healing. The procedure is scheduled for November 18 and will cost $1,500. After recovery, Kyel will be able to return to school. Kyel says, "I my dream of being a professional singer one day."

Aye is a nine-year-old primary school student from Thailand. She lives with her parents and five siblings. Last year, a teacher noticed that Aye was unable to read at long distances. Aye's mother and her teacher took her to our medical partner's care center, Mae Tao Clinic (MTC), and she was referred to Mae Sot Hospital (MSH) for further investigation. At MSH, Aye was told that she has cataracts and she needs surgery as soon as possible. Currently, Aye's eye is blurry and itchy. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $1,500 to fund lens replacement surgery for Aye. On October 25, doctors will perform a lens replacement, during which they will remove Aye's natural lenses and replace them with an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $1,500 procedure.

Jecinta is a shy 17-year-old girl from Kenya who loves playing volleyball. She is the third born in a family of four children. Her family lives in a house provided by their church members because they cannot afford to rent one. Jecinta is supposed to be in her first year of high school, but has still not enrolled due to financial constraints. When she was born, Jecinta's mother noticed her feet were unusual and, as she continued to mature, her feet developed facing outward. Her condition, diagnosed as clubfoot, gave her an unstable gait and often caused her to fall. Due to lack of information and poor finances, the family did not get any assistance. In February 2017, Jecinta successfully underwent triple arthrodesis treatment for her right foot and has been recovering well. On September 11, Jecinta will have treatment on her left foot, enabling her to wear shoes and walk without pain and discomfort. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, requests $1,224 for her medical treatment. “I thank God my right foot has corrected and I have healed now," says Jecinta, while looking forward to her next surgery.

Meet Wilson, a 50-year-old father of two children from Kenya. He enjoys discussing politics and interacting with guests at the hotel where he works. In February of this year, Wilson developed a persistent headache. Wilson initially managed the headache with painkillers but by the end of April, he noticed that his eyesight was worsening. Wilson sought immediate medical attention at our medical partner's care center, AIC Kijabe Hospital, where he was given pain medication and underwent a CT scan. The CT scan subsequently revealed that Wilson has a brain tumor. He has not been back to work since then and can no longer go anywhere on his own. On July 7, Wilson will undergo a craniotomy to remove the brain tumor. The specimen will also be sent to a pathology laboratory to undergo further testing to determine if the tumor is malignant. Wilson and his extended family have raised $312 for his surgery but he needs our help to fund the remaining $1,495. This will cover Wilson's surgery, hospital stay, and laboratory tests. "I want to be well as my children need me," Wilson shares with our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation.

Sana is a 14-year-old girl who lives in Thailand with two of her sisters and her brother-in-law. Sana moved about one month ago in order to begin attending a local migrant school. Before that, Sana lived with her mother, father, and two other siblings in Burma. Her parents and siblings encouraged her to relocate for her education. When she was twelve, Sana began noticing that her left eye was blurry and that sometimes fluid would come out of her eye. This made it hard to read and would often cause headaches when she tried to concentrate. In March, a clinic ophthalmologist associated with our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund (BCMF), visited a village near Sana. Sana explained that her eyesight had worsened in the past year, and she was told to come back for a return appointment. During that visit, it was decided that Sana needed a CT scan for formal diagnosis. Sana says, "I like studying every subject at school. I really don't want my eyesight to affect my education." Watsi is requesting $414 to fund Sana's CT scan, which is scheduled for April 24.

Truphena is a three-month-old girl from Kenya. The youngest of four children, she is the much-loved baby of the family. Truphena's mother, a cook, and father, a motorcycle taxi driver, are eager to see their daughter well again. When Truphena was born, she was diagnosed with congenital hydrocephalus—a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the cranium that can increase pressure on the brain, causing mental and physical health problems. She was in pain and crying often. Her parents took her to the hospital for a brain scan, which confirmed the necessity of surgery. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $685 to fund Truphena's operation. She is scheduled for treatment on May 4 at our medical partner's care center, Bethany Kids Kijabe Hospital. “I am overjoyed to know there is a place my daughter can get treated,” Truphena's mother says.

Jericho is a two-year-old boy from the Philippines who loves to play with his siblings. He lives with his family in a simple house made from wood and metal sheets. Jericho's father is a construction worker, and his mother earns money washing clothes. Jericho has been diagnosed with moderately acute malnutrition. Malnutrition threatens his growth and development and could even be fatal if not addressed. Fortunately, he will begin $184 malnutrition treatment on February 22. Jericho will be treated by International Care Ministries (ICM), a Watsi medical partner. One out of five children under five in ICM communities is either severely or moderately malnourished. Worldwide, poor nutrition is associated with nearly half of all deaths in young children. In remote communities and urban slums of the Philippines, the lack of clean water and unclean environments add risk to potentially fatal childhood diseases. ICM’s home-based feeding program provides nutrient-enriched food packs to ensure malnourished children get additional food to regain normal weight and achieve optimum physical and mental development. After identifying a child as malnourished, staff and community volunteers make weekly visits to monitor this child’s progress. To help sustain the health of the child, ICM’s professional staff educate the mother, guardian, or other family members about proper nutrition, sanitation, hygiene, and organic vegetable gardening. Jericho's mother hopes that he "finishes his studies and will have a good future."

Chisomo is an 11-year-old boy from the Central Region of Malawi. He lives with his mother, father, and four brothers and sisters. He loves going to school and excels in math. When not doing his school work, he likes to play football with his friends. In February, Chisomo developed a painful hernia in his lower abdominal region. The pain has kept him from attending school regularly and playing with his friends. His parents are very concerned for their son's health, but do not have the money to pay for the corrective surgery. They were very excited to hear about the opportunity to receive funding. Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting $334 to cover the cost of Chisomo's hernia surgery. He is scheduled to undergo treatment on March 23 at our medical partner's care center, Nkhoma Hospital. Chisomo and his family are very excited for him to have his operation.

Okumu is 58 years old and has five children: three boys and two girls. He is a subsistence farmer from Uganda. He is most happy when he has enough food for his children. A year ago, Okumu developed bilateral swellings in his groin. As the swellings increased in size and grew painful, he started using herbs to reduce the pain. Okumu reports difficulty lifting heavy objects. At the suggestion of a friend, Okumu visited our medical partner’s care center, Holy Family Virika Hospital, where he was diagnosed with bilateral inguinal hernias. An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. Without treatment, Okumu may experience intestinal blockage or damage. Fortunately, on March 8, Okumu will undergo a hernia repair surgery. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $249 to fund the procedure. After surgery, he hopes to continue farming so that he can sell some produce and earn money to take care of his family.

Tophias is a 32-year-old woman from Uganda. Her husband, Philipo, is a truck driver. She enjoys singing in church and participating in savings groups in her community. Tophias is pregnant. She has already undergone two C-sections in the past, so her doctors considers hers a risky pregnancy. They recommend that she receive medical attention before, during, and after labor to ensure a safe delivery. On January 31, she will begin to receive supplements and attend antenatal checkups and health education classes. She will deliver her baby via C-section in the hospital. After birth, Tophias and her baby will be monitored by the hospital staff. Tophias has contributed $4 to her treatment. Our medical partner, The Kellermann Foundation, is requesting an additional $333. She looks forward to delivering her baby safely. She also hopes to send her children to school. Tophias is grateful to her donors.

Ampaire is an 18-month-old boy and the oldest child of his single mother. Six months ago, he developed a painful swelling in his left groin region. He was taken to a hospital, where he was diagnosed with a left inguinal scrotal hernia. His doctors recommended surgery, but his mother could not afford treatment. Without treatment, hernias can lead to continued pain, infertility, organ strangulation, and other complications. Fortunately, Ampaire and his mother visited our medical partner's care center, Holy Family Virika Hospital. On December 7, he is scheduled to undergo a repair surgery, during which doctors will move Ampaire's organs back inside the intestinal wall, relieving his symptoms. For $249, we can fund this procedure. “I am stressed and worried because my baby is sick, and I don’t have money to pay for his treatment.” says his mother. Let's help her and Ampaire!
