Kim Sour is a 32-year-old factory worker, from Cambodia. She is married with one daughter and two sons. Kim Sour's husband is a fisherman. When she is not at work, she helps her children at home and prepares food for their family. Six years ago she began experiencing ear discharge. In the past few years she has experienced ringing in her ear and hearing loss as well. Kim Sour had an ear infection and this infection caused her tympanic membrane, or the ear drum, in her right ear ear to perforate. Her husband feels very worried about his wife's pain and hearing loss. Kim Sour traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On September 1st, she will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in her right ear ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $464 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. She said, "I hope that this surgery can improve my hearing and make my ear pain stop."

Phannith is fourteen years old. He is a student in the ninth grade. He has one younger sister in fifth grade. His parents are factory workers and work long hours, so he takes care of his sister everyday. His favorite subject at school is math and he wants to be a computer programmer when he grows up. Since he was born, Phannith has had torticollis. The muscles on the left side of his neck are involuntarily contracted, causing his head to tilt to that side, and he has difficulty moving his head or looking around. It can also cause recurrent neck pain and make it difficult to sleep. Fortunately, surgeons at Children's Surgical Centre (CSC) can perform a tenotomy to release the tension in those muscles and allow Phannith to gain normal movement of his head once he has recovered and completed physiotherapy. Now, Phannith needs your help to fund this $541 surgery. Phannith shared, "I hope that soon my neck will feel better and look better. I hope I can play sports with all my friends and not have to worry about neck pain."

Musiimenta is a 17-year-old student. She is the third-born in a family of six children, of which she is the only girl and has five brothers. Musiimenta initially arrived at the hospital complaining of chest and epigastric pain associated with vomiting. She expressed that she has felt a mass in her lower abdominal region for the past three years. Musiimenta also reported that she always felt as though she has a full abdomen, headache, abdominal discomfort. These symptoms have hindered her appetite, and she often felt congestion in her chest, causing shortness of breath. Though she had been experiencing symptoms for a while, Musiimenta had never been to the hospital for medical treatment before because her parents could not afford care. However, when her condition worsened, her father brought her to hospital, where she was referred to the gynaecologist for further assessment. A scan indicated a solid mass and a normal uterus with some fluid accumulation, which caused her abdominal swelling. Musiimenta was diagnosed with a large bilateral tubo ovarian mass and was recommended for curative laparotomy treatment. However, this procedure is costly for Musiimenta and her family. Her father is a small-scale farmer with a banana plantation, where he is able to grow food and sell plantains to earn an income. He sometimes brews locally made alcohol called tonto to sustain his family and pay school fees for his children. Her family does not have enough extra income to pay for her treatment and they are appealing for financial support. On November 3rd, Musiimenta will undergo a curative laparotomy procedure to treat her condition. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $242 to cover the total cost of her procedure and care. This procedure will hopefully reduce the swelling in her abdomen and halt the discomfort she has been enduring. Musiimenta's father shared, “I hope that once my daughter undergoes surgery, she will be able to live well once again in good health. She will continue with school after she has recovered and when schools are re-opened.”

Pauline is married and a mother of 5 children who are in school in Kenya. She and her husband do casual work in the neighboring flower and coffee farms. Two years ago, Pauline began to experience troubling symptoms, including a swelling on her neck, headache and chest pain. She was diagnosed with a goiter, an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Pauline receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on June 15th at our medical partner's care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $688, and she and her family need help raising money. “Nowadays this swelling is giving me a lot of pains and headache. I am not able to go for work and I kindly request assistance,” said Pauline.
