Edmond is a playful eight-year-old boy. He is the second born child in a family of four children. Sadly, his father passed away in 2021 after a short illness. His mother works as a sweeper in a supermarket to provide for the family. The family lives in a two-room home. Recently, Edmond fell while playing at school and injured his left arm. He was brought to a local hospital where he had an x-ray and was told that he had dislocated his elbow. However, he received a second opinion at our medical partner's care center and was diagnosed with a left supracondylar fracture. He needs urgent surgery to treat his injury so he can heal properly. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare (AMH), is helping Edmond receive treatment. On February 8th, he will undergo surgery to repair the fracture. This will ensure that his hand heals well and that he can use it fully in the future. Now, their family needs help raising $852 to fund his procedure and care. Edmond's mother shared, "I dream of getting my family out of poverty. I am trying to look for a better job so that I can care for my children. Unfortunately, my son's arm is now fractured. I am worried about his future if he is not treated."

Savoeun is a 39-year-old seller of small goods from Cambodia. She is married with three children and likes to watch TV. Savoeun has a ten-year history of hip pain, which is gradually worsening and now severe. She is limited to walking with a zimmer frame just a few steps at a time, making it difficult to look after young children. Fortunately, Savoeun learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre. At CSC, surgeons can perform a total hip replacement to relieve Savoeun of her pain and allow her to walk easily. Treatment is scheduled for January 9, and Savoeun needs help raising $1,025 to pay for this procedure. She says, "I hope to walk better after my operation."

“We have already seen great improvement in our son’s condition,” shares Derrick’s mother. “Derrick has healed from the surgery on his left foot. What we are asking for now is your help in treating his right foot so that he can walk normally one day.” Five-year-old Derrick is a lively and playful boy from Kenya. The third and youngest child in the family, he is only a nursery school pupil, but already loves to read. Derrick was born with genu varus, or bowleggedness, in both limbs. This seriously affects his gait. Although normal in very young children, Derrick’s condition has now persisted long enough that it needs surgical intervention. With Watsi’s help, he successfully underwent [an operation to correct his left leg](https://watsi.org/profile/622139a16f73-derrick), and now needs to undergo the same procedure on his right. Just as they needed financial assistance for his first operation, Derrick’s parents need your help again with this one. His father, a fisherman, is the family’s sole breadwinner, and his income is reliant on the seasons and weather. The family lives in a small grass thatched house. For $1,165 we can sponsor Derrick’s second surgery on January 15. This sum will also cover the costs of his lab tests, medications, and five-day hospital stay. “Thank you for your support,” says Derrick’s mother.

Teresia is a 51-year-old married mother of four children. She lives with her family in central Kenya. Her husband is a casual construction worker. Teresia shares with our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), that she started experiencing irregular bleeding in a sensitive area about two months ago. Teresia has now been diagnosed with uterine fibroids and has been recommended for a total abdominal hysterectomy. AMHF has arranged for her $718 surgery to take place on September 8. "I have struggled a lot. I hope for assistance so that I can go back to my normal life," says Teresia.

Rose is a 51-year-old mother of two from Haiti. She and her children—who are now grown, and have children of their own—all live together with Rose’s mother. In her spare time, Rose enjoys going to church activities (she was recently baptized) and taking care of her grandchildren. Until recently, Rose earned money to support her family by selling grilled corn as a street merchant. But lately, Rose has had to go without this income source. Her health has not been good, and so the heat of the grill and the heavy lifting involved in transporting her produce make the job too physically demanding for her. For some time, Rose’s right breast has been itchy and painful to the touch. She also feels very tired all the time. Around a year ago, she went to the hospital. Multiple exams revealed that she has breast cancer. Although this diagnosis was very upsetting for Rose, she wants to take all the right steps to win her health back. Her doctors have recommended a mastectomy, and she has been scheduled to undergo one on August 3. But she cannot afford the procedure. We need to raise $1,085 to sponsor Rose’s surgery, as well as the necessary lab tests, medications, and travel to and from the medical center. After this mastectomy, Rose will be able to enjoy time with her family again—especially with the grandchildren that she adores. She will also be able to help support her family by returning to work.

Marie-Ange is a 30-year-old mother of three living in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. To support her family, Marie-Ange worked as a street merchant selling cosmetic products. About two years ago, Marie-Ange felt a small mass in her left breast. She saw a doctor, who told her that the mass was not dangerous and prescribed her some medication. Noticing that the mass did not go away, Marie-Ange sought a second opinion from a doctor at our medical partner's care center, St. Luc Family Hospital. Doctors at St. Luc did a biopsy of the mass and diagnosed Marie-Ange with breast cancer. However, before she could begin chemotherapy Marie-Ange found out that she was pregnant. Doctors therefore decided to forego chemotherapy and conduct a mastectomy. After giving birth, Marie-Ange was still feeling discomfort at the site of the mass. She returned to the hospital to have the mass re-examined and doctors suggested she undergo a second mastectomy and then chemotherapy. Our medical partner, Innovating Health International, is requesting $1,085 to fund the surgery. Marie-Ange is hopeful that after treatment she will be able to return to her job and continue to care for her young family. Her surgery is scheduled for August 26.

Emeline is an outgoing eight-year-old girl from Haiti. She lives with her parents and brothers. Her parents work in agriculture to support their family. Emeline makes friends easily and likes playing games and listening to music. Emeline was born with a cardiac condition called ventricular septal defect, where a hole exists between the two lower chambers of her heart. Blood leaks through this hole without first passing through her lungs to obtain oxygen, leaving her feeling weak. On August 2, Emeline will be traveling from her home in Haiti to our medical partner's care center, Health City Cayman Islands, in the Cayman Islands. There she will undergo heart surgery. Our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, is asking for $1,500 to help cover the cost of Emeline's surgery prep. Another organization, Have a Heart Cayman, has contributed $17,000 towards her treatment. We are also fundraising for her [transportation costs](https://watsi.org/profile/eb06991ca5de-emeline). "My family is all very happy to know that there is a chance for Emeline's heart to be healed," says Emeline's mother.
