"Scovia and her husband Ronald are so excited about having their first child, because they have been trying for a while," our medical partner, The Kellermann Foundation, says. Scovia is a 25-year-old expectant mother working as a small-scale farmer in Uganda. In their free time, SK tells us, "Scovia and Ronald enjoy going to church and socializing with their neighbors.” Scovia has been identified as a high-risk pregnancy because her baby is large. To help ensure a safe delivery, Scovia will require a Cesarean section, which will cost $303. Scovia and Ronald are looking forward to bringing their baby home. They hope that their child is born healthy, and they will be able to pay school fees so he or she can have a good education. "Both parents would like to say thank you to all the donors," our medical partner adds. "Having a C-section is expensive and they appreciate the help very much."

Rose is a community leader in Kenya who recently had to stop working because of pain and bleeding from cervical cancer. Rose needs a total abdominal hysterectomy, a procedure that costs $750. Rose cannot afford the treatment, but if she does not receive care, her doctors expect that her cancer will spread and eventually cause her death. With the hysterectomy, it's likely that Rose will recover from cancer and lead a normal and productive life. Rose hopes this surgery will help her regain strength and allow her to continue her self-less lifestyle by doing what she loves most - helping people.

Grace is 28 and pregnant with her fourth child. She and her husband are saving and preparing for the birth as best they can, but Grace is nervous. She told Lwala “I am worried that when the labor happens, it will happen too fast before I can make it to hospital.” Only 44% of births in Kenya are attended by a skilled health professional even though medical care can avoid and treat many of the risks associated with maternal mortality and morbidity. Lwala Community Alliance and their maternal health program want this to change. They provide maternal care and community education services for women like Grace. Grace is hoping, “to deliver a baby well without any problems.” The $215 can help with that. Grace will receive essential pre- and post-natal care and will be able to deliver her baby in a hospital.
