Caren is a five-year-old girl from Tanzania. She is one of six children in her family, including her twin sister, who she loves and adores dearly. Caren is currently in nursery school. Caren was born a very healthy child but as she grew, her legs started to bend outward, making it painful and difficult for her to walk. Her parents never took her to the hospital, fearing treatment would be too expensive. If not treated, however, Caren will continue experiencing pain and discomfort when walking. On September 15, Caren will undergo surgery for her leg condition. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $838 for Caren's medical care. Caren’s father says, “I am grateful for this treatment, I can't wait for my daughter to start walking well again.”

Myo is a first grade student from Burma. She lives with her family in Myawaddy, Karen State, Burma. Not long ago, Myo's school teacher noticed that she was unable to see the board. At home, her grandparents noticed that she held books extremely close to her face. Myo has been diagnosed with cataracts. Her family fears that she will be hit by a motorbike or car. They also worry about her future and ability to pursue her education if she does not receive treatment. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $1,500 to fund lens replacement surgery for Myo. On November 1, doctors will perform a lens replacement, during which they will remove Myo's natural lenses and replace them with an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $1,500 procedure. Myo says, “When I grow up I want to learn how to be a doctor."

Wislande is a 48-year-old woman from Haiti. Wislande has five children. Her family lives in Port-au-Prince. Wislande used to work as a street merchant before she became ill. Wislande enjoys attending church and participating in the activities with her church. At our medical partner's care center, Wislande was diagnosed with breast cancer. She will have to undergo a double mastectomy, since the cancer has now spread to her right breast. As a result of her illness, Wislande cannot wash her clothes or clean the house. She also cannot work and support herself. Fortunately, in May 2017, Wislande started chemotherapy. After four sessions of chemotherapy, Wislande will undergo a double mastectomy on August 26. Our medical partner, Innovating Health International, is requesting $1,085 to cover Wislande's procedure. This will cover the full cost of treatment, including labs, medication, physician and nurse time, radiology, supplies, and travel expenses.

Yar is a 40-year-old woman from Burma. She is unemployed and lives with her 70-year-old father. After experiencing severe stomach pains, Yar recently underwent abdominal surgery at a local hospital. A few days into recovery, she noticed that her incision did not appear to be healing properly. She returned to the hospital, where they discovered that her intestine was protruding through the wound. On July 19, surgeons will operate on Yar's abdomen to address the improperly healing wound. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, requests $1,500 to cover her treatment. In the future, Yar looks forward to recovering and regaining independence. "I hope to raise pigs and chickens for a source of income once I am recovered," she says.

Savai is a 75-year-old woman from Cambodia who is married and has one daughter, four sons, and 10 grandchildren. In her free time, she likes to listen to monks pray at the pagoda. About six months ago, Savai developed a cataract in each eye, which has caused her to experience blurred vision and extreme sensitivity to light. As a result, it is difficult for her to see things clearly, recognize faces, do work, eat, and go anywhere by herself. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $398 to fund small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant for each of Savai's eyes. The surgery is scheduled to take place on July 3 and, once completed, will hopefully restore Savai's vision to its former state and allow her to live more comfortably.
