Doeur is a 26-year-old father from Prey Veng province, Cambodia. He is married and has a two-year-old daughter. His wife works in a nearby clothing factory, and he has recently started a job as a welder. In his free time, he likes to play volleyball with his friends and spend time at home with his wife and daughter. Three years ago, following a motorbike accident, Doeur developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him loss of vision in the affected eye. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he is not able to go places on his own. When Doeur learned about our medical partner Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), he traveled 4.5 hours seeking treatment. On August 7th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery (cataract surgery that employs ultrasound energy) and an intraocular lens implant (an artificial replacement for the lens of the eye) in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Doeur is able to contribute $100 towards the cost of the surgery and is asking for help to raise the remaining $253 to fully fund the procedure. Doeur shared, "I hope after surgery my eye can see clearly again. I can go to work well again and can take care of my family well."

Dada is a newborn baby girl, entered the world last week on December 2nd in Lobosiret, Simanjiro district in Tanzania. As the youngest member of the family, her parents were filled with joy to welcome her into the world. Her father works as a livestock keeper, while her mother is a dedicated homemaker. Upon observation, Dada’s mother noticed that her daughter’s legs seemed different from those of other babies. Concerned, her mother sought advice from the doctor at the hospital, who reassured her that both conditions were well-known and treatable. After spending a few days at home, Dada’s parents decided not to delay seeking treatment for their daughter. Dada was born with clubfoot of both feet. Clubfoot is a condition in which the foot is twisted out of shape. This causes difficulty walking and even wearing shoes. Fortunately, Dada's family traveled to visit our medical partner's care center, Kafika House. There, the team will begin clubfoot treatment on December 12th. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $935 to fund Dada's clubfoot repair. After treatment, her crawling and walking abilities will be enhanced even as she grows. With this treatment, Dada will eventually be able to wear shoes without experiencing any discomfort. Her parents were comforted after they were provided with information about Dada’s condition, seeing it as a significant step towards ensuring their daughter could lead a life free from disability. Dada’s mother says: “I am hopeful that my daughter will have normal legs and grow up to be like her older siblings.”

Alex is the 3rd born in a family of four children and hails from Longonot, Naivasha, in Nakuru county. His mother told us he likes playing with other kids at home. Alex came to Cure Hospital accompanied by his mother, Grace, a housewife, and his father, farmer. Alex was born with multiple disabilities - spina bifida, hydrocephalus, and bilateral foot deformity. He underwent treatment for spina bifida when he was five days old, and hydrocephalus treatment was done at the age of eight months. Currently, he tiptoes as he walks and often falls. He is scheduled to undergo bilateral serial casting and then foot reconstruction surgery. The treatment will be impactful to the young boy because he will be able to walk, run, and play like other children and continue with his education uninterrupted. Alex's mother said, "I believe the joy of a mother is to see her children growing well and not with challenges, and therefore, I would love to see Alex walking normally like other children if given assistance."

Benedict is a 57-year-old father from the Philippines. His wife, two daughters, and two stepchildren all reside with him and he works hard to support them. He keeps himself occupied by caring for doves, which is a love that become his hobby. He lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to provide for his family, he turned his hobby into a business. Benedict now sells doves which is the family's only source of income. He usually earns around Php 8,000 ($141 USD) a month doing this. One month ago, Benedict began experiencing troubling symptoms, including excruciating discomfort, which restricts his ability to perform his day to day tasks. He suffers greatly from even the smallest movement. He cannot sit, stand up, or walk without pain. Benedict was diagnosed with Mixed Hemorrhoids Grade IV, the most severe level of internal hemorrhoids. He needs surgery to prevent his symptoms from getting worse. Fortunately, our medical partner, World Surgical Foundation Philippines (WSFP), is helping Benedict receive treatment. He is scheduled to undergo a hemorrhoidectomy on September 30 at WSFP's care center. A portion of the cost of his treatment is being supported by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, and WSFP is raising the remaining $1,285 to cover the cost of Benedict's procedure and care. Benedict said: "I hope to be a beneficiary of surgery as we cannot afford the expenses for the operation. Our family does not have a lot of income and I am hoping to remove the pain of my illness to return to work as the breadwinner for my family."

Sath is a 79-year-old retired rice farmer from Cambodia. He has two sons and two daughters who are also rice farmers. Sath currently lives with his wife and his youngest son, who supports them financially. While walking home one evening in 2019, Sath was hit by a car. He suffered a head injury and a fracture of his lower right leg. He underwent surgery, and his leg was casted, but when the cast was removed, the fracture remained unhealed. Because of the Covid pandemic, Sath was unable to travel, and his family didn't have the money to fund additional care, so he improvised, using a bamboo splint. However, he has continued to have an open wound on his right leg and is unable to walk. A friend in the village told him about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC). Sath and his wife traveled two hours for treatment. Doctors at CSC's care center diagnosed him with a chronic wound infection. His bone is exposed, and he needs debridement of the wound and a skin flap - a reconstructive surgery technique involving the transfer of skin from one area of the body to another. Sath's surgery is scheduled for August 8th at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre. Sath is able to contribute $100 to his treatment, and needs help raising the remaining $991. This sum will cover the cost of his surgery, hospitalization, medications, and rehabilitation. Sath said: "After surgery, I hope that my wound closes and I can walk again."

Moe is 42-year-old man from Thailand. He lives with his mother, sister, brother and nephew on the Thai-Burma border. They are all unemployed due to the difficulties of the local situation. In his free time, he enjoys playing badminton and designing t-shirts. On July 3rd, Moe was playing badminton with his friends when he slipped and fell. After he fell he could not move and experienced pain in his right leg. He received an x-ray at Mae Sot Hospital and was diagnosed with fractures in his right tibia and fibula (both bones in the lower leg). He experiences extreme pain in his right leg. He cannot move or lift it, nor can he comfortably sit up. Due to the pain, he cannot sleep well, and he has little appetite. He needs to rely on his brother for all personal care. With the help of our medical partner Burma Children Medical Fund (BCMF), Moe will undergo surgery to reset his fractured bones and ensure proper healing. The procedure is scheduled for July 20th and BCMF is requesting $1,500 to fund his treatment. This procedure will help Moe walk again and be free of pain. He will no longer have to rely on his brother to help him with personal care. Moe shared, “I feel so upset because I never thought that I would be like this [bed-bound]. I want to have my surgery soon because I feel a lot of pain in my right leg. I am really thankful for the donors who are paying for my treatment."

Victoria is a 3-month-old baby from Bolivia. She lives with her mother in a neighborhood in La Paz. Her mother makes and sells handcrafted hats for a living. Victoria was born with a cardiac condition called Total anomalous pulmonary vein return. With this condition, the major blood vessels connect to Victoria's heart at abnormal locations, making it difficult for blood to flow through her lungs and leaving her weak and short of breath. Fortunately, our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, can help Victoria receive the treatment she needs. On July 12th, she will undergo cardiac surgery, during which the doctors will disconnect the blood vessels and reattach them at the anatomically correct locations. Our medical partner is requesting $1,500 to fund VIctoria's surgery costs. Victoria's mother said, "I am very hopeful that my daughter will be able to breathe normally and gain weight after this surgery!"

Melesh is a playful and smiley four year old girl who lives with her mother, two brothers and one sister in Ethiopia. She is the youngest of the four children, and loves going to school. Melesh's older siblings have finished high school, but did not proceed to university, and are currently unemployed. Her mother - who is divorced from Melesh's father - makes and sells traditional beverages for a living. Her mom shared that their family does not receive any support from the father. Melesh was born with a rare, congenital anomaly, called bladder exstrophy. As a result of this condition, the abdominal wall doesn't fully form as the bladder is developing, leaving the pubic bones separated, and the bladder exposed to the outside surface of the skin. Urine leaks directly into Melesh's abdomen, so that she suffers from infections and other symptoms. In fact, Melesh has stopped going to school because the other children insult her because of her condition. Melesh's mother is worried, as Melesh has isolated herself to avoid being stigmatized by the community. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is seeking $1,500 to fund the Mainz Pouch procedure which if successful, should enable Melesh to pass urine normally. Surgery is scheduled for May 16th at BethanyKids Myungsung Christian Medical Centre, and should allow Melesh to resume the life of a happy and healthy four year old. Melesh's mother said: “I will educate her once she gets the surgery and heals. I will work on keeping her clean. I hope she will be content and healthy."
