Meet Kemitojo, a 55-year-old woman living in Uganda. She has seven children that have all gone on to be married and have their own homes.
Kemitojo has a supra-umbilical hernia, which means that parts of her abdominal content are protruding out of the body cavity where they are supposed to be. It causes swelling and pain that prevents Kemitojo from sitting up properly or sleeping comfortably. If not treated, the condition could obstruct her intestines and possibly lead to premature death.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), explains how this has affected Kemitojo's life. “Kemitojo can no longer do any physical activity and depends on her daughter for every basic need." Kemitojo generates her income by carrying and selling matooke, a local Ugandan food, but she was forced to stop due to her excruciating pain.
$120 will cover the cost of a herniorraphy which will surgically repair the hernia, repositioning tissue or removing dead tissue where necessary. This will alleviate her pain, eliminate the risk of bowel complications, and allow her to be active again.
Kemitojo says, “When I get this surgery, I shall be able to go back to look after my old husband and resume my business so that I can stop depending on my children."
