Meet Derrick, a one-month-old baby boy. Derrick’s mother Elizabeth is very excited to have given birth to her son three weeks ago. “He is the third child in the family,” says our medical partner in Uganda, The Kellermann Foundation.
However, Elizabeth and Ventura—Derrick’s parents—are now worried about their son’s health due to a case of pneumonia. “Derrick has a difficulty in breathing and this has affected him, causing him not to breastfeed,” reports the hospital staff. Pneumonia is potentially life-threatening for infants, and Derrick currently requires hospital care to treat his condition properly.
Derrick’s two elder brothers attend school locally, and both of his parents farm for a living. The family hopes for support to cover the $90 hospital bills to treat Derrick’s lung infection. During a three-day hospital stay, Derrick will receive antibiotics and oxygen, which should bring him back to good health and allow him to resume breast-feeding.
“I would like to thank everyone who is supporting the life of my baby,” says Elizabeth. “All the nurses, doctors and people helping by paying the health care bills for my child, may God bless you abundantly.”
