PATIENTS Rich's Birthday HAS FUNDED

“I love my son for being the smallest, most beautiful baby I have ever seen, but I wish he was not sick,” says the mother of Jose, a four-year-old boy who lives with his parents and eight older siblings in Guatemala. “Ever since Jose was born premature, he has struggled,” shares our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK). “At two months old he began having regular seizures, which led to large developmental delays. At four years old, Jose is still unable to talk and has problems walking.” WK adds, “Jose is also malnourished, and his family does not have the resources to afford the appropriate nutritional support or medical treatment.” $1,385 in funding pays for a thorough diagnostic work-up and treatment phase, followed by ongoing therapy. This includes imaging and blood work to identify conditions contributing to Jose’s delayed development, anti-seizure medication to help prevent future seizures, and therapy—physical, speech, and nutritional—to support Jose’s growth and development. Funding also covers the cost of a case manager to help Jose’s family coordinate his care and monitor his progress. WK tells us, “This treatment will give Jose the support he needs to thrive. With time he will be able to operate more independently and even be able to work and contribute to his family’s economic well-being. With the help of Watsi support, we will be able to supply him with the right medical and educational support to recover his health and begin to grow normally.” Let’s help fund treatment for Jose!

“John is a beautiful little boy living with his father,” shares our medical partner in Haiti, Project Medishare (PM). Just eight years old, John is in severe respiratory distress. “Twelve months ago John fell on a rock while biking in his neighborhood, and his parents did not take him to the hospital because they did not have money and it was not severe,” PM explains. “A few days later John started having difficulties breathing and his belly, face and foot started swelling.” When his father saw this, he took John to the hospital where he was given oxygen. However, pus in his right lung is still preventing him from breathing normally. In order for John to recover, he must receive surgery to remove the pus. “John's father is working very hard to raise money for him,” PM tells us. “He has to walk under the hot sun of Haiti every day, selling used stuff.” John’s father shares, “I fix stuff I find to sell in order to get money to feed my kid. I only came to the hospital with John hoping to receive free care because he was very sick; when they said to me that it is a private hospital and that I have to pay, I thought about going back home because I have no money.
” Thankfully, John’s father does not have to take his son home. With $1,500 in funding, PM explains, “Treatment will consist of a thoracic drainage by surgical intervention.” First, the pus will be drained from John’s lung. Second, John will be given antibiotics to treat the infection. Finally, he will rejoin his family and resume his healthy life. “This surgery will save John’s life,” PM shares. Let’s fund this life-saving treatment and allow John to live a normal childhood—without pain and respiratory distress.

Meet Alba, a bright-eyed, one-year-old girl from Guatemala. She is the youngest of four children and is raised by her single mother. According to our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK), a total of nine people live in Alba’s grandparents’ two-room house, where Alba “loves to play dolls with her two older sisters.” Alba is suffering from acute malnutrition. “Her weight and height are far below the average for her age, and she is at for the risk for long-term negative effects of malnutrition,” WK explains. “If left untreated, Alba will start to miss developmental milestones. She currently has low energy, and her body is struggling to grow and develop normally. Her immune system is weak, and she is at risk for infections, such as pneumonia. Later in life she will be at higher risk for chronic illness such as diabetes and hypertension.” Fortunately, we can give Alba the care she needs, as $535 in funding will cover the supplemental nutrition, medication and health education that will allow Alba to recoup her weight and weight. “The nutrition education will have long lasting effects, giving Alba’s mother the tools she needs to continue providing nutrition to Alba and her other siblings even after treatment is complete,” WK reports. In addition, Alba’s “immune system will strengthen, allowing her to better combat infections and illness throughout her life.” Alba's mother shares, “I want my daughter to grow up and become a lawyer. That’s my dream for her. She should help treat the injustice that exists in this society…fight for her children, and make a better life for them than we have now.”

Meet Rosy, a one-year-old girl from Guatemala. Despite coming from a loving family, Rosy is chronically unwell as a result of acute malnutrition. “Rosy’s family is extremely poor, and the majority of her caloric intake comes from nutrient poor tortillas,” explains our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK). “This diet has restricted Rosy’s ability to grow physically and mentally, and now she is hitting developmental milestones months behind an average child her age.” Without intervention, Rosy’s condition will impact her health and ability to succeed in school. Her immune system will be unable to successfully combat infections, translating into further sickness, low energy, and inability to concentrate. As a result, her ability to learn will decline, thus decreasing her likelihood of succeeding later in life. Rosy is an only child, so if her parents receive nutritional education and supplemental support, they will have a good chance of ensuring economic stability for the family. “I want what is best for my child,” says Rosy’s mother. “I have heard about what you do, and I hope you can help me be a better mother to her.” Rosy’s family can put Rosy’s health back on track with our help. For $535, Rosy will receive the proper treatment for her malnutrition. This treatment will supply her with growth monitoring, micronutrient and food supplementation, and medication for her to help her attain healthy growth. In addition, Rosy’s mother will receive nutrition education that will build her confidence in ensuring Rosy has a healthy childhood.
