Lucia is a 7 year-old indigenous girl who has a rare form of congenital heart disease called a double outlet right ventricle. Her family is from an often marginalized indigenous group and does not speak any Spanish. Lucia had never seen a doctor in her life before she came to Wuqu’ Kawoq. It’s a good thing she finally did, because if left untreated, her condition could result in congestive heart failure (where the heart can no longer effectively pump blood to the rest of the body), high blood pressure in the lungs (making it difficult to create oxygen-rich blood), and irreversible damage to the lungs.
Here’s the good news: doctors at Wuqu’ Kawoq can perform open heart surgery that will repair Lucia’s defect and allow her to live a long and healthy life. Unfortunately, Lucia’s family is too poor to pay for her medical expenses, so it’s up to us to make up the difference.
We need to raise $495 so Lucia can have this critical surgery and go on to live the happy, care-free life that every little girl deserves. Let’s do this!
