Keak is a 69-year-old widow with one son and two daughters. All of her children work in another country, because of the lack of opportunity for them in the rural areas of Cambodia. Keak’s husband passed away during the Khmer Rouge regime many years ago in Cambodia. She lives alone and is supported by her children and a neighbor. She enjoys listening to the monks on the radio, and helps with housework when she is able.
One year ago, Keak developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision and sensitivity to light. She doesn’t see colors well and has difficulty walking by herself because she is afraid she will fall. She is lonely and would like to be able to walk in her neighborhood by herself.
When Keak learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, she traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. On January 10th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure.
Keak shared, “I hope after surgery my eye can see better. I can go outside, take care of myself and cook for my neighbor again.”
