Esdras is a very smiley one-year-old boy. He loves to babble to people and to play with his favorite toy, a fish doll that sings.
Esdras was born with webbed hands and feet. When he was six months old, he had surgery to separate his fingers on his right hand, but his parents have not been able to afford to fix his other hand and his feet.
After his surgery, his parents noticed that he lost his appetite and began to lose weight.
Now Esdras is suffering from severe acute malnutrition. He is getting sick more often, and his mother is worried about him, especially since he does not want to eat.
Esdras’s parents cannot afford the treatment he needs in order to overcome his illness. They are both 21, and cannot yet afford their own house. Esdras’ father works as a day laborer, but sometimes there isn’t work for him and it’s difficult for him to cover the costs of feeding his family.
But for $512, we can help Esdras beat malnutrition. Funding will purchase dietary monitoring, food supplements, and medication for Esdras to get him back to a healthy weight. And his parents will also receive intense nutrition education so that they will be empowered to give him the foods he needs to grow and develop healthily.
Esdras’s parents share, “We hope that our son grows happily and healthily. We do not have the resources necessary for him, so we appreciate the support you are providing to our son. With this help he will get better.”

Esdras received successful treatment for acute malnutrition.
After coming down with an infection a few weeks after beginning treatment, Esdras had a lot of trouble gaining weight and overcoming severe acute malnutrition initially. Our community health workers visited his house almost every day to ensure that he was getting the treatment he needed. He has made an incredible recovery, and has now reached a normal weight for his age. His mother is thrilled with his weight gain, his increased appetite and energy levels, and his desire to play all the time (although his mother wishes his favorite toy weren’t a whistle). His mother has noticed that he smiles more now, and is beginning to talk. Since beginning treatment he has also learned to walk. We are confident that Esdras will continue to grow and play like a healthy child.
“I appreciate the support and the attention that my son has gotten,” shares Esdras’ mother. “We are extremely content because we see that every day he is better. Now he is eating, and is a very active child that always wants to walk and play. I hope that he keeps growing thanks to your support.”
