62-year-old Sarom is a retired garment factory worker from Phnom Penh in Cambodia. Unfortunately, Sarom was widowed eight years ago when her husband passed away after being in a traffic accident. Together, they had two daughters, three sons, and four grandchildren. Sarom now lives with her elderly mother and youngest daughter, spending her days caring for her mother.
About four years ago, Sarom developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her itchiness, tearing, and blurry vision. In addition to the discomfort caused by the cataract, Sarom’s vision is impaired.
Sarom sought treatment from our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre.
On April 26th, doctors at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre will perform phacoemulsification cataract surgery and implant an intraocular lens in her right eye. After she has recovered, Sarom should be able to see clearly once again. Now, Sarom needs help raising $253 to fund this procedure.
Sarom shared: “I hope after surgery that I will be able to do my housework and take care of my mother and grandchildren well.”

Sarom underwent cataract surgery to see clearly.
It was difficult for Sarom to travel to Children’s Surgical Centre because of her elderly mother, but it was important for her to have her eye repaired so she can see well enough to run the family household. She had successful eye surgery and was able to return home with antibiotic eye drops to aid in healing and reduce the chance of infection. As her vision slowly improved, she was amazed at how poor her vision had been and is excited that she can recognize faces better, go outside in the bright sun again, and be more active. Sarom looks forward to improved vision and is happy her eye will feel better soon.
Sarom shared: “With my better vision, seeing my family and going outdoors is easy. I can take care of myself and my mother, assist my daughter with household chores, and go outside which makes me very happy. Thank you to those who helped me have this surgery.”
