Sethika is a 2-year-old girl who lives in the countryside with her grandmother; her parents work and live in Phnom Penh. She loves to eat fruit and listen to her grandmother sing.
When she was nine months old, her mother noticed that the thumb of her left hand was abnormally extended. She is unable to flex her finger or move it voluntarily, making it difficult to hold or grab things.
Surgeons at Children’s Surgical Centre will perform a tendon procedure to secure her thumb. Sethika’s mother said, “I hope that she can move her thumb well and grab onto her things so that she can play and write easily as she grows up.”

Sethika underwent life-changing hand surgery.
Sethika’s hand surgery went well, and she and her family have returned to her province. Her family has worked with the Children’s Surgical Center (CSC) physical therapy team to help Sethika strengthen her thumb and fingers as she recovers from her surgery. Thanks to this surgery, Sethika can live a full life and she will be able to use her hand to hold things as other children do.
Sethika’s grandmother shared, “I’m so happy to see my grandchild’s hand fixed. She will be able to play with other children and use her hand now.”
