Katurebane is a 58 year old farmer from Uganda. She is a married mother to seven children. She earns a living by cultivating small gardens of beans, maize, and potatoes for feeding her family and says she sells off the surplus for an income. Her husband is a pit latrine digger.
Two years ago, Katurebane began to experience troubling symptoms, including pain on swallowing and difficulty in breathing. She was diagnosed with a nodular goitre, an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. She needs surgery to prevent her symptoms from getting worse.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Katurebane receive treatment. She is scheduled to undergo a thyroidectomy on June 9th at our medical partner’s care center. Surgeons will remove all or part of her thyroid gland. This procedure will cost $264, and she and her family need help raising money.
Katurebane says: “I pray that my condition improves so that I can’t have a peace of mind after surgery. I hope to resume with cultivation after surgery.”
