Da is a 57 year old retired rice farmer, living in Cambodia. Together, she and her husband - who is also a rice farmer - have two daughters and five grandchildren. Da spends her days caring for her grandchildren, and keeping up with current events.
One year ago Da developed a cataract in her left eye. Because of the tearing and blurry vision caused by the cataract, Da is unable to see small details clearly, even with the addition of extra light. As a result, she is hesitant to go out on her own.
Da traveled for quite a distance to seek care from our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre. With their help, Da was able to be scheduled for cataract surgery on October 17th, at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre. During the procedure, surgeons will remove the cataract, and implant an intraocular lens in Da’s eye, enabling her to regain full vision, and the ability to feel secure enough to go out on her own again. Now she needs your help to fund this $253 procedure.
Da said: “I hope after surgery I can see better and recognize my family. I want to help my husband in the rice field and do more around our house.”

Da underwent cataract surgery and restore her vision.
Da knew her vision was deteriorating but didn’t know what to do about it until a neighbor suggested she go to Children’s Surgical Centre for free surgery. Two days after the procedure, she was able to return home with eye drops to use several times daily. She kept her affected eye covered until she returned for her post-operative checkup. Da is amazed that her vision has improved so much and looks forward to taking walks with her husband outside and visiting her children - which is one of her life’s greatest pleasures.
Da’s husband said: “We are lucky that our neighbor told us about the hospital and she could get surgery to fix her eye. Free eye care is not available in our province, and we are grateful that people supported Da to have this surgery. Thank you to the staff at the hospital, they were very kind to us after a long trip.”
