Seven-year-old Janaki is from Nepal, and studies in 1st standard. He loves reading Nepali stories.
Janaki was walking home from school one evening when he slipped on grass and fractured his right elbow. His injury has not only prevented him from going to school since he can’t write, but he has also needed help with basic activities such as changing, going to the bathroom, eating and lifting things.
Janaki lives with his mother, his younger sister, and his grandma. His father works as a construction worker and lives in another city.
Although only seven, Janaki takes care of his younger sister at home and teaches her nursery rhymes and alphabets. After the fall, his mother has been worried about his elbow, fearing that if not treated it will become deformed in the future and hinder his ability to work.
They walked over two hours to reach the hospital.
With $579, surgeons will align Janaki’s bones correctly and secure them with pins. After the operation, Janaki will stay in the hospital for 1-3 days for observation. He will also be visited by community health workers after discharge and will be back at the hospital three months after treatment for followup and x-rays.
