Matiko is eight years old and lives in Tanzania with his parents and seven siblings. Matiko likes to play football and other sports with his friends. When he grows up, he wants to be a soldier and fight for his country.
Matiko developed skin contractures, the tightening of the skin, due to third-degree burns on his neck, shoulder, chest, and arm. Back in March, Matiko received his first contracture release burn treatment procedure through our medical partner, Mission Restore.
Matiko has now returned to receive a skin graft to his neck and right shoulder to regain the movement of his neck and arm. He is scheduled to undergo this burn treatment on May 6, and is requesting $1,376 to cover costs such as surgeons and physicians, hospital admission, medical supplies, and post-operation in-home nurse visits.

Matiko did not undergo his scheduled burn treatment.
After Matiko recovered from his first surgery, his doctors had decided he would benefit from receiving a second surgery of skin grafts to the neck and right shoulder. However, after some complications during Matiko’s recovery, his doctors decided that the additional skin grafts should be postponed to at least six months from now. Matiko certainly faces more surgeries in his life, but it became clear that these surgeries will have a higher likelihood of success if they are performed after Matiko continues healing and doing physical therapy at home.
