Yoem is a 67-year-old father of three. He has three sons and six grandchildren. Yoem’s sons all work in construction, while Yoem lives and studies at the pagoda.
Four years ago, Yoem developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him blurry vision and photophobia. As a result, he has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he cannot go places independently.
When Yoem learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), he traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On February 22nd, doctors will perform cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. CSC is requesting $229 to help fund this procedure.
Yoem shared,”After my surgery, I hope my eye can see clearly. I want to get around easily on my own, read books, and join in for the ceremonies.”

Yoem underwent sight-restoring cataract surgery.
Yoem was sad that his vision affected his ability to teach Buddhism because he could not read any longer. With improved eyesight, he is hopeful he can return to his passion of supporting young monks. Within a few weeks, his vision will improve enough for him to read again. He feels this will improve his life because he can participate in ceremonies at the pagoda which fulfills his life’s dreams.
Yoem’s son said: “We are relieved my father can see better and can do the things he has always enjoyed to support the family and our community. We want to thank the CSC staff and everyone who supported him to have surgery.”
