Melany is a five-month-old baby girl from the coastal region of rural Guatemala. She lives with her mother, grandmother, aunts, and uncles. Her father left when she was born, and thus her mother has become the sole provider for Melany’s family.
This young baby is currently malnourished due to her mother’s inability to produce breastmilk. The short-term effects of lactation failure have rendered Melany vulnerable to illness, and she has experienced several bouts of fever and diarrhea. In the long term, she could face increased risk of chronic diseases and delayed brain development.
Luckily, while lactation failure is dangerous, it can be easily treated with the proper formula and health education. On May 2, Melany will begin her treatment. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, is requesting $1,162 to help her grow.
Melany’s grandmother says, “Thank you for the support that my granddaughter will receive. It has been difficult because my daughter is working as a single mother, but she does not earn enough money…My dream is to see Melany grow up to become a nurse.”

Melany underwent nutritional supplementation.
Since beginning treatment for lactation failure, Melany has been gaining weight and growing stronger. Before beginning in the program, Melany often fell sick with diarrhea and fever, and she was not receiving enough nutrition because her mother could not produce breastmilk, and could only afford to feed her boiled sugar water. Now, however, Melany is growing and developing better—she loves to smile and play with her aunt, and she is already trying to sit up by herself. With continued treatment, we are confident that Melany will continue to grow and thrive.
Melany’s mother says, “I am happy and grateful with you all for your help, for my daughter is already better. Thank you for your help. My desire is to see my little girl grow so that she can go to school and have a better future.”
