“Having a cleft lip and palate has affected Aung Mat’s speech and learning development,” Burma Border Projects (BBP) writes about this young boy from Burma. “Although he is ten-years old he has never attended school, despite desperately wanting to. With his current condition the school would not allow him to enroll.”
Aung Mat’s parents both work on tea plantations to support their family - their daily income is $2. “Aung Mat’s parents were not able to accompany him on the three-day journey from the Burma-China border to Thailand for treatment,” BBP tells us. “Every day they miss work means less food on the table for the family.”
Clinicians at BBP are prepared to perform surgery to repair Aung Mat’s cleft lip at this time. With $300, we can fund this procedure and allow Aung Mat to live a healthy life!

Aung Mat received surgery to correct his cleft lip and palate.
His surgery was a success!
Aung Mat is more confident after having his surgery. He told his doctors, “I have a nice face, I’m happy!”
“He is currently learning to adapt to speaking with his new mouth,” his doctors write. “With practice he will be able to speak clearly in a few years. Now that his cleft lip is repaired he will be able to start school next year. Aung Mat said he wants to learn to read and write like his friends who already attend school. He understands he will be behind but he is determined to be educated.”
