At only nine months old, Helen is a fighter. Helen was born in rural Guatemala with Down’s syndrome and a significant heart defect. The combination of the muscular weakness from the syndrome and her worsening heart failure have made Helen malnourished. She urgently needs heart surgery to kickstart her recovery.
Helen’s parents are hopeful that their daughter’s congenital heart disease can be treated so that she can receive the nutrients she needs to become a healthy child. Unfortunately, they are unable to afford the cost of surgery.

Helen received heart surgery to reverse heart failure and save her life.
Prior to the heart procedure, doctors decided to hospitalize Helen for treatment of acute malnutrition. She gained weight in the hospital and was finally strong enough for the surgery. After a week in hospital she returned home and is recovering well. Doctors are confident that she will continue to grow and will lead a normal life with a healthy heart.
