Samnang is a 41-year-old bladesmith from Cambodia. He lives in Phnom Penh with his wife and three of his four children. His oldest son is a monk, and the younger three are students. Samnang makes knives to sell in the market, and his wife stays at home to care for the house and their younger children. In his free time, Samnang likes to watch videos to improve his work skills.
In January 2021, Samnang was in a motorbike accident that caused a fracture in his right clavicle. He visited an emergency clinic, where doctors fixated hardware to heal the fracture. Currently, Samnang experiences pain in his shoulder and frequent numbness in his arm and hand. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), can help. On May 10th, Samnang will undergo a hardware removal procedure to relieve his pain and improve functioning in his shoulder. CSC is requesting $304 to fund this procedure. Samnang contributed $100 to his care.
He said, “I hope to go back to work as soon as possible without discomfort.”

Samnang underwent hardware removal surgery.
Samnang’s hardware was successfully removed by surgeons at Watsi’s medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC). Although Samnang may experience some pain for a few weeks as he continues to heal, this procedure will allow him to begin strengthening exercises with the physiotherapy team, which include activities to stretch and strengthen his shoulder - a process that is essential for his recovery. Overall, his recovery journey is expected to take approximately six weeks. Samnang looks forward to the future and hopes to return to regular activity in his shop to forge blades. Additionally, by returning to his work, Samnang can earn enough money to feed and support his family.
Samnang shared: “I am thankful I could have my operation so I can be on my feet all day. My family will have food because I will have a strong leg to work. I feel comfortable with CSC taking care of my problems. We are very grateful for the good care.”
