Meet Sort, a 74-year-old man from Cambodia. Sort is married with three sons, two daughters, and 20 grandchildren. He enjoys reading religious texts and visiting the pagoda.
One year ago, Sort developed mature cataracts in each eye. A cataract occurs when a thin, cloudy layer forms over the eye’s lens. This causes him blurred vision, discharge, tearing, and fear of bright lights. It is hard for him to see clearly, do work, or go anywhere outside.
Sort and his wife travelled three hours to visit the clinic for care. They learned that a simple surgical procedure may restore Sort’s sight.
With $225, Sort will undergo cataract surgery, during which his old lenses will be removed and replaced with sheer artificial implants, allowing him to see again immediately after his operation.

Sort received vision-restoring cataract surgery.
Sort can see clearly again for the first time in one year. With restored vision, he looks forward to reading books and going outdoors by himself without assistance.
Sort’s surgery lasted approximately 45 minutes, during which his clouded lenses were replaced with artificial implants. He can return to Children’s Surgical Centre at any time for follow-up care if he experiences complications, but he has been discharged and is expected to make a full recovery.
