Meet Momoi, a nine-year-old girl who lives in Tanzania with her mother. “She likes being around people, running around with other children,” shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF).
Momoi is an only child who has trouble using her hands after an accident where she was severely burned. AMHF explains that Momoi’s mother wasn’t able to share the painful story of her daughter’s accident. “Whenever asked about her daughter, tears would fill up her eyes, and all she could say was it happened a long time ago when Momoi could only crawl.”
AMHF continues, “Momoi cannot use her right hand at all and her left hand has minimal functionality. The fingers on Momoi’s right hand have all been burnt and the left hand fingers have contractures. After the fire accident, Momoi’s father abandoned his family. Momoi’s mother struggled to raise her child alone. She works at other people’s farms and she also sells some fruits at an open market. The little that she earns is not enough to cover the cost of the operation which her daughter needs.”
$870 in funding will provide Momoi with the contracture release and skin graft surgery she needs to regain use of her hands. After the surgery, AMHF expects “Momoi’s left hand fingers will be more flexible and the space created between her right thumb and middle finger after removing the index finger will make her right hand more functional.”
Momoi shares, “I hope to go to school one day.”
