Meet Piseth, an eight year old boy attending school in Cambodia. Like many boys his age, Piseth enjoys playing football and watching TV. However, a recent traumatic injury from football led Piseth to have discharge from his left ear, preventing him from hearing properly. Piseth was previously treated for this ear condition, but its return has brought Piseth and his mother to Watsi’s medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre.
Ears, nose, throat (ENT) doctors at the Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Center quickly noticed a swelling in his left ear and an abscess of the external ear canal. Piseth will require a mastoidectomy to drain diseased air cells from his temporal bone. This should ameliorate his current conductive hearing loss and allow him to return to school with no auditory limitations.
The last few weeks have been difficult for Piseth to go to school and communicate with other people. $809 in funds will stop Piseth’s pain and discharge. He shares, “I hope my ear will return to good health after the operation, so I can go back to school. I want to be a teacher when I grow up.”
