Nyiraneza is a 58-year-old mother who lives with her grandson in Uganda. Two years ago, she started feeling abdominal pain that did not subside when she attempted to relieve it with herbs.
Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, explains that Nyiraneza visited a health center where she was referred to a hospital, and subsequently diagnosed with uterine fibroids.
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that can cause severe abdominal and lower back pain. “Because of the pain,” AMHF adds, “Nyiraneza can no longer dig and she is unable to lift heavy items. If not fully treated, Nyiraneza will live with the pain and she will not be able to perform her tasks fully.”
Nyiraneza digs and gardens for a living. Although her grandson helps her fetch water and cook, she cannot complete other necessary tasks while she continues to live in pain. Nyiraneza was advised to have surgery, but could not afford the procedure.
Nyiraneza sold her pig, and used the money from the sale to transport herself to the hospital.
With our help, Nyiraneza can receive a total abdominal hysterectomy for $250, including a five-day hospital stay and medications. “A total abdominal hysterectomy will lead to an improved quality of life for Nyiraneza,” shares AMHF. “She will be free from the pain and able to work in her garden.”
After surgery, Nyiraneza hopes to recover and continue working in her field. “I pray the donors will be willing to help pay for my surgery,” she shares.
