James is a 39-year-old father of two young children. His wife stays at home with the children, while James works whenever he can get jobs on construction sites - work that is both inconsistent and poorly paid. On the 10th of August, James was hit by a speeding vehicle when he was on his way to work. He was left seriously injured, and his colleagues rushed him to the hospital, for emergency care. He has been in the hospital for four days, awaiting surgery to repair a fractured tibia. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, can help. On August 16th, James will undergo a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation, at AIC Kijabe Hospital. The procedure will enable him to walk easily again, and to resume working, so that he can continue to support his family. African Mission Healthcare is requesting $979 to fund this procedure and care. James says: “I feel stranded and worried. The accident left me immobile and unable to work. My family entirely depends on me, and I cannot work in this condition. I need surgery to walk and work.”

Piseth is a 33-year-old monk from Cambodia who lives in a pagoda near his hometown in Prey Veng province. Piseth's mother lives nearby and works on a rice farm. Piseth enjoys studying Buddhist texts and visiting his family in his free time. Ten years ago, Piseth had an ear infection. This infection caused a cholesteatoma, or abnormal skin growth, to develop in the middle ear behind the ear drum. For this reason, it is difficult for him to hear and communicate with others. Piseth traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On June 28th, he will undergo a mastoidectomy procedure in his left ear. During this procedure, ENT surgeons will remove the cholesteatoma. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, requests $926 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. He said, "I hope I can return to the pagoda and hear everyone better."

Maria is an elderly small-scale farmer and mother to five children, sadly, two of whom have passed away. Among her children, she has two sons: one is a teacher, and the other is a builder. Her daughter is pursuing a career as a nurse. She lost her husband twelve years ago, but through her dedication to farming, she has been able to proudly provide education for all her children until they became self-reliant. Although Maria completed primary school, she was unable to pursue her own further studies. Currently, Maria resides with her granddaughter, born to one of her late sons who served in the army. For three years now, Maria has had a left reducible inguinal hernia, a type of painful hernia where soft tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall. Maria sought medical care after experiencing swelling, fatigue, and movement-triggered pain that greatly impacted her ability to work and perform everyday activities. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, can help Maria. On June 6th, she will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. African Mission Healthcare is requesting $230 to fund Maria's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow her to live more comfortably and confidently. Maria says, “I hope to get well and I will continue living in better health."
