Lester received asthma treatment and medication.

Lester’s mother has been thrilled to see her son able to run and play along with the other kids–before he would have to stop and take frequent breaks because of his asthma. He is a successful student in the 1st grade now, and loves to play soccer with his friends at school. With continued support in the next couple months, Lester will be able to manage his asthma and be able to keep living a normal childhood.

“We don’t have the resources to cover the costs of treatment for our son. We are so appreciative of you of the support that my son is receiving,” Lester’s mother shared. “My hope is to see him this happy for a while, so he can become a studious young man and a good person.”

Meet Lester, a seven-year-old boy from Guatemala who loves to play soccer. However, “he often gets tired playing with his friends, and can’t run around for long periods of time because he gets short of breath,” reports our medical partner Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK).

“His parents did not realize he had asthma,” WK continues, “and just thought that he had a bad cough that would not go away.” Asthma is an inflammation of the airways that makes it difficult for Lester to breathe. This can be triggered by a variety of factors including dust and physical activity.

Doctors are worried about Lester’s wheezing, and want to start him on drugs that help to keep his airways open. However, his father’s income working in the coffee fields is just enough to pay for food and rent, and their family cannot afford the expensive medication Lester needs.

Let’s help raise the $301 Lester needs for his treatment, which will cover the costs of his medicine and any additional medical attention he needs. This will allow him to play for longer periods of time without coughing, and he can have a normal childhood with more independence.

Lester’s parents are excited for his treatment so that Lester can grow up happy and healthy with his three brothers. “We want him to grow very big, and his dream is to study and graduate to be an accountant,” his mother shares. “We appreciate the help that our son will get, and we trust that he will get well.”

Beatrice

34-year-old Beatrice lives with her husband and four children in Malawi. Beatrice uses the income from the saloon that she owns to take care of the needs of her children. Her husband, who is a businessman, uses his income to take care of their home, a three-bedroom house that has neither running water nor electricity. In 2020, some of Beatrice's friends noticed a swelling in her neck. Beatrice- who was pregnant at the time- went to the hospital to be evaluated. She was told that the swelling might be related to her pregnancy and that she should come back after giving birth if the swelling hadn't subsided. The swelling continued to grow; ultimately, Beatrice was diagnosed with a goiter- a swelling of the thyroid gland- and told that she would need to have her thyroid surgically removed. Beatrice's surgery continued to be postponed, but her symptoms of breathlessness and coughing- which often kept her from going to work- continued to worsen. Finally, her sister suggested that she visit Partners in Hope Medical Center, where doctors scheduled her for surgery on January 31st. As Beatrice is unable to cover the costs of her treatment, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is seeking $1,015 to fund Beatrice's thyroidectomy. Beatrice believes the removal of her thyroid will help her to return to her home in Blantyre, and to rejoin her family in good health. She believes her children are the reason why she lives, and she knows that she has to be healthy in order to continue supporting them. Beatrice said: “I am looking forward to getting back to normal.”
